Happy Arbor Day!

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Arbor Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. The first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872, and an estimated 1 million trees were planted that day. Although celebrated for many years prior, legislation was passed in 1953 establishing Arbor Day in Ohio. Here are a few facts about trees in Ohio:

  • Ohio has many private tree nurseries that sell bare root seedlings, containerized plants, and balled & burlaped trees.
  • Ohioans plant and care for nearly 15 million trees each year.
  • Ohio’s forested acreage has increased from 12% in the 1940′s to 31% by 2005.
  • Ohio’s “urban forests” are probably the fastest increasing forested areas in the State.
  • Ohio leads the Nation in the number of certified Tree City USA communities.
  • The Governor of Ohio proclaims Arbor Day each year with an official resolution.
