Looking for some fun ways to be outdoors this weekend? We have some ideas!
- ZooBlooms at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo takes place this Saturday from 10am-7pm. This annual day for gardeners highlights Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s diverse botanical collection and features a bumper crop of experts and activities. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s 183 manicured acres featuring plant life from around the world. Visitors may take in the natural beauty on foot or aboard one of two guided ZooTram tours.
- Head over to the 2011 Toledo Lighthouse Waterfront Festival this Saturday and Sunday. Boat rides, lighthouse photo contest, huge silent auction, arts & crafts vendors, sandcastles on the beach, food, kids activities.
- Do you like butterflies? Would you like to learn more about these winged creatures or share your knowledge? Please join the Caesar Creek Rangers for our annual Butterfly Census in conjunction with the North American Butterfly Association.
- Falcon & Friends takes place this Saturday from 8-8:45pm! Be sure to include this exciting event in your travel plans! Meet birds of prey up close at the Mohican State Park Resort as staff from the Ohio Bird Sanctuary introduce you to a few of their avian friends and share interesting natural history facts.
- This Saturday is the Take a Hike: Historic Gateway Neighborhood. Locals and visitors alike can experience Downtown Cleveland’s rich history on four unique guided walking tours featuring talented actors and actresses portraying important, historic Clevelanders.
- This Sunday is the Take a Hike: Canal Basin Park. The Canal Basin Park Take a Hike tour is offered every Sunday at 10 AM beginning at Settler’s Landing RTA Station (1025 West Superior Avenue – Take Superior down the hill (north of the bridge) into the Flats. The tour begins on the brick patio next to the glass RTA Station.) The tour lasts a little over one and a half hours in length, and attendees have the opportunity to “meet” Mrs. Alfred Kelley as history comes to life along the tour route. Make plans to enjoy lunch after your tour to extend this enjoyabl Sunday outing! Tour Admission is FREE.

It’s already the 4th of July and we have a lot of fun activities to share!
- Red, White and Boom! takes place tomorrow. The biggest and best Independence Day fireworks celebration in the Midwest will be fired from its location at Veterans Memorial in downtown Columbus, displaying a vibrant look with an exciting environment. Enjoy great food, music and fireworks at the 31st celebration of Red, White & BOOM!
- Visit Maize Valley Market and Winery or try to visit one of their locations at these various Farmers’ Markets.
- The 32nd annual Old Fashioned Farmers’ Show will feature antique tractors & machinery, threshing, gas engines, a sawmill, kids and adult pedal tractor pull, a car show, mule & donkey show, antique car racing, antique tractor pull, corn shredding, a trading post, a quilt show, crafts, a flea market, food vendors, animal land, steamed sweet corn, the Western Ohio Garden Tractor Pullers, a garden tractor display, country / polka / gospel / and /50s & 60s music, and more.
- Participate in the Flaming Torchlight Canoe Trip. Experience canoeing by the light of the moon. On this date we will canoe under the Waxing Crescent Moon. As the Moon moves around the Earth it becomes more illuminated and provides light that reflects off the Hocking River.

- On Monday there is the16th Annual Firecracker Century Bike Tour. A scenic ride through Van Wert County awaits participants in this year’s bike tour. Experience the rich farmland of rolling hills and flat land that once was part of Lake Erie and the Great Black Swamp. Routes of approximately 18, 32, and 62 miles (metric century) have been mapped out with a departure from Jubilee Park at 7:30 AM. The tour has been organized by the Van Wert County Historical Society.

We’re starting a new Thursday series that will feature a handful of statewide events happening during the upcoming weekend.
- Visit your local farmer’s market! A few that were featured on Discover Ohio’s website werePort Clinton‘s (Saturday), Carrousel District‘s (Friday), Guernsey County‘s (Friday).
- Pick Strawberries! You can pick your own over at Sunrise Farm (Burton), A & M Farm (Midland), and Ridgeview Farm (Middlefield).
- Blooms & Butterflies 2011 takes place this weekend at Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, Ohio.
- The Big Campout! at Penitentiary Glen Reservation is in Kirtland, Ohio. Gather up your family and get back to nature this summer! Bring your tent or camper to Penitentiary Glen Reservation for a special overnight camping event, including campfires and special nature hikes for the entire family.
- Youth Fishing Derby this Friday and Saturday in Wilmington, Ohio. Young people, ages 3 – 17, can register any fish caught in Cowan Lake during the June derby. Fish may be registered at one of the participating bait stores. The derby is free and open to the public. No pre-registration is required. There will be six winners. Each winner receives a $10.00 gift certificate good at one of the bait stores.
- The 17th annual “A Garden Art Happening” takes place this Saturday and Sunday from 10am-5pm.
- This Saturday from 7pm-10pm, participate in the Flaming Torchlight Canoe Trip. Experience canoeing by the light of the full moon. The moon’s bright light reflects off the shimmering Hocking River to provide a truly romantic experience.
- Bryan Recreational Park is hosting A Day in the Park on Sunday. This one day of fun features activities for all ages including rides, food and games. Even take a dip in our swimming pool! Enjoy on-going softball games, a huge car show with more than 150 cars and live music. Make plans for a picnic and the spend the day.
